About This Course
Modern utility networks rely on a combination of Layer 2 control mechanisms and dynamic routing protocols to ensure reliable and efficient communication across critical infrastructure. In this course, you will learn how devices discover each other, form resilient connections, and calculate optimal paths through the network.

Starting with foundational protocols like LLDP and LACP, the course builds toward a deep understanding of OSPF as the core interior routing protocol, including how routing decisions are made and how network state is synchronized. You will also explore how MP-BGP enables service-aware routing and supports the separation of multiple networks over shared infrastructure.

By the end of this course, you will understand how the control plane of a utility network operates and how it reacts to failures, topology changes, and scaling requirements.
Target Audience
  • Network engineers working in utility or critical infrastructure environments
  • Technical professionals responsible for network operations or monitoring
  • Engineers transitioning from legacy transport technologies to IP-based networks
  • Project managers or planners who need a structured understanding of network behavior
Prerequisites
  • Basic understanding of IP networking concepts (IP addressing, routing basics)
  • Familiarity with Ethernet and general network terminology
  • No prior experience with OSPF or BGP required
MPLS & VPN Service Architecture for Utility Networks
Builds on this course by showing how routing and control plane decisions are translated into transport and service delivery across the network.

What you´ll learn

  • Explain how devices discover neighbors and validate physical connectivity using LLDP

  • Analyze how link aggregation improves bandwidth and resilience using LACP

  • Describe how OSPF builds a complete network topology and calculates optimal routes

  • Interpret OSPF neighbor states and understand how routing information is synchronized

  • Understand how fast failure detection mechanisms like BFD improve network convergence

  • Explain how MP-BGP enables VPN-aware routing and separates networks using VRFs
