About This Course
Utility and service provider networks must transport large volumes of traffic while ensuring strict separation between different services and network domains. This course introduces the technologies and design principles that make this possible.

You will begin by understanding how MPLS enables label-based forwarding and how traffic is efficiently transported across the network. Building on this, the course explores how VPN services are constructed, including Layer 2 and Layer 3 service models such as E-PIPE, VPLS, and L3 VPNs.

Special attention is given to how services are isolated using mechanisms like VRFs, route distinguishers, and route targets, and how performance and resilience are managed through techniques like traffic engineering and active multipath.

By the end of this course, you will understand how modern utility networks deliver scalable, flexible, and secure services across a shared infrastructure.
Target Audience
  • Network engineers working with MPLS or service provider-style architectures
  • Professionals responsible for designing or managing utility communication networks
  • Engineers looking to understand VPN technologies and service separation
  • Technical decision-makers evaluating modern network architectures
Prerequisites
  • Basic understanding of IP routing and networking concepts
  • Familiarity with routing protocols such as OSPF (recommended)
  • Completion of Network Control & Routing Foundations for Utility Networks is helpful but not required
Network Control & Routing Foundations for Utility Networks
Provides the control plane fundamentals required to understand how MPLS and VPN services operate.

What you´ll learn

  • Explain how MPLS uses labels to forward traffic across the network

  • Compare LDP and RSVP-TE for label distribution and traffic engineering

  • Describe how transport and service labels enable end-to-end connectivity

  • Analyze how Layer 2 services such as E-PIPE and VPLS are constructed

  • Explain how Layer 3 VPNs use VRFs, route distinguishers, and route targets for isolation

  • Understand how advanced mechanisms like jitter buffers and active multipath impact performance and resilience
