Artificial intelligence is moving rapidly from experimentation into utility planning, engineering, field, customer, and operational environments. This 2.5-hour course equips experienced utility managers to separate practical opportunity from technology-driven enthusiasm.

Participants will distinguish AI from analytics, automation, optimization, and autonomous control; evaluate the maturity and operational relevance of leading use cases; classify applications by criticality and authority; and determine whether AI is the right solution to a clearly defined business or operating problem. Through a utility-focused screening exercise, managers will prioritize candidate initiatives and issue an evidence-based proceed, revise, defer, or reject recommendation.

The course is designed to deliver immediate value without requiring prior AI expertise: each participant leaves with a structured AI Opportunity and Use-Case Decision Card, identified evidence gaps, named ownership, and a thirty-day action/objective; leading to a real management decision, not simply greater awareness. It also establishes the common vocabulary, classification framework, and decision discipline required for the subsequent implementation and governance courses and cross-functional management alignment.

A fellow at both CS2AI and the TBI Institute, his advisory and academic experience includes US & international governments and corporations, multiple industry/academic boards, and undergraduate/graduate level course development and instruction in the university environment.
